Nouakchott, Islamic Republic of Mauritania – 28 April 2025

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is proud to announce its official participation at AOW:Energy 2025, taking place from 15–18 September 2025 in Accra, Ghana, where it will showcase the world-class Bir Allah discovery and broader upstream investment opportunities to the global energy community.

Led by His Excellency Mohamed Ould Khaled, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mauritania’s high-level delegation will be engaging directly with international operators, investors, and partners at the event. The Minister has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to opening its offshore basins and providing one of the most competitive, risk-adjusted upstream environments in Africa. In a statemement from the Minister of Energy and Petroleum it is clear the future is progressive and bright for Mauritania,

“Mauritania is open for business, and we are ready to welcome new partners,” said H.E. Mohamed Ould Khaled. “At AOW:Energy in Accra, we will present the full opportunity of Bir Allah, one of the largest gas opportunities both globally and in Africa. With its strong leadership, low-risk environment, and unprecedented geological potential, Mauritania is the right destination for upstream investment. I encourage all operators looking to expand their portfolios to meet our delegation in Accra this September and to be part of Mauritania’s transformational energy journey.”

A Compelling Opportunity for Global Operators

Mauritania’s Bir Allah discovery sits at the heart of the South Mauritania Gas Hub (SMGH) and offers a significant 80 TCF of unrisked gas resources and 38 TCF risked GIIP. The field’s development potential includes large-scale LNG export, domestic gas-to-power solutions, and downstream industrial applications such as petrochemicals and blue hydrogen. Mauritania’s upstream sector presents a highly attractive value proposition:

  • Extensive seismic and well data available for partner screening.
  • Transparent licensing processes with flexible state participation structures.
  • World-class petroleum systems based in deepwater Cretaceous fan deposits.
  • Proximity to infrastructure, supporting fast-track ILX (Infrastructure-Led Exploration) and low-cost development models.

Building on a history of significant exploration success, with over 103,000 km of 2D seismic and 108,000 km² of 3D seismic acquired, Mauritania stands as one of the most technically de-risked and commercially attractive frontiers in the MSGBC Basin.

An Open Invitation to Global Upstream Investors

Any operator or investor looking to screen new frontier geology, access high-potential low-cost development opportunities, and participate in West Africa’s emerging LNG wave should strongly consider Mauritania as their next destination. Mauritania’s strategic position in the MSGBC Basin, combined with stable leadership and a progressive regulatory framework, offers a rare and compelling upstream growth opportunity.

In a further statement from Paul Sinclair, CEO, Sankofa Events and AOW:Energy it was clear the partnership of AOW:Energy and Mauritania is one that will continue long into the future, “I am incredibly excited about the deepening and long-lasting partnership between Mauritania and AOW:Energy. Over the years, we have built a relationship rooted in trust, mutual respect, and a shared vision for the future of energy in Africa. Today, more than ever, Mauritania stands out as a beacon of opportunity, and I am personally committed to ensuring that its full upstream potential is recognized and realized on the global stage”.

A tremendous amount of work is underway behind the scenes to create real, tangible connections between Mauritania’s leadership and the international energy community through AOW:Energy. Mr Sinclair went on to add “Our mission is clear, we are proud to be working with the government of Mauritania and will do everything we can to  connect operators, investors and service providers to the government to unlock every element of Mauritania’s extraordinary upstream sector”.

Mauritania’s geological promise, political stability, and forward-looking strategy deserve the highest levels of engagement, and we are proud to provide the platform to make it happen. This is more than an event partnership; this is a long-term commitment to growth, to success, and to delivering real, lasting impact for Mauritania.”

The Minister of Energy and Petroleum, along with senior leadership from the Mauritanian energy sector, will be available for 1-2-1 meetings at AOW:Energy 2025. This is a unique opportunity to directly engage with the team responsible for unlocking Mauritania’s next energy chapter.

Operators are encouraged to contact the AOW:Energy team to arrange a private meeting and discuss available acreage, investment terms, and partnership structures.
