The alliance between AOW: Investing in African Energy and The Gambia (Gambia National Petroleum Corporation GNPC) exemplifies the profound impact of collaboration in harnessing Africa’s natural resources to drive economic growth and energy security. This partnership, rooted in mutual respect and shared objectives, has evolved over the years, underscoring the transformative power of unity in the energy sector.

In 2021, AOW:Energy provided The Gambia with a pivotal platform to showcase its offshore potential to the global energy community. This inaugural presentation not only highlighted The Gambia’s promising hydrocarbon prospects but also marked the beginning of a dynamic exchange of ideas and initiatives aimed at bolstering the nation’s upstream sector. Since then, AOW:Energy and The Gambia have worked hand in hand to amplify interest and investment in the country’s oil and gas industry, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to leveraging natural resources for national and continental advancement.

The Transform Margin: A Testament to West Africa’s Potential

West Africa’s Transform Margin has long been a beacon for hydrocarbon exploration, with countries like Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana achieving remarkable milestones. Nigeria’s prolific offshore fields have solidified its status as a leading oil producer, while Côte d’Ivoire’s recent Calao discovery by Eni underscores the region’s untapped potential. Ghana’s Jubilee field, after over 15 years of production, continues to exceed expectations, exemplifying the enduring productivity of West African offshore assets.

Senegal’s offshore achievements further illuminate the region’s promise. The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, marking its first LNG shipments, is poised to revolutionize the nation’s economy and position Senegal as a key player in the global energy market. This success story extends through the MSGBC basin, highlighting The Gambia’s emerging role within this prolific geological setting.

The Gambia’s Offshore Promise

The Gambia’s offshore domain presents an exceptional opportunity for exploration and development. With approximately eight offshore blocks and two onshore blocks, the nation’s data coverage is about 80% offshore and 5% onshore. Since 2014, The Gambia has drilled up to 11 successful wells, piquing industry interest in the nation’s offshore prospects. Its proximity to Senegal’s 230-million-barrel Sangomar discovery further accentuates its prospectivity.

In blocks A2 and A5, the government extended FAR’s permit in July 2023, with reduced annual fixed charges, until September 30, 2025. To support geoscience evaluations and exploratory wells, FAR is currently seeking farm-in partners. Additionally, in 2020, PetroNor E&P reactivated its Block A4 license under modified terms, including an extended initial exploration period of three years, allowing further exploration activities. The government holds the remaining 10% of the block, with PetroNor owning 90%.

Leadership Driving Progress

Gambia National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and the Petroleum Commission have been instrumental in promoting and positioning The Gambia as an upstream destination. Professionals such as Baboucarr Njie, Managing Director; Cany Jobe, Director of Exploration & Production; and Lamin Sanneh, Director of Operations, have demonstrated exceptional leadership in driving the nation’s energy ambitions. Their dedication reflects a broader commitment to fostering an environment conducive to investment and sustainable development.
